Upon getting home I decided to give the demo's on the disk a try and have to say I wasn't all that impressed and didn't really enjoy many of the games included on the disk apart from "The Shoot" which is basically just a light gun game that sees you er.. shooting things on the set of a film. It really is quite good though and I can see myself playing it when the full game is released some time this month. The other game I enjoyed was the Disc Golf demo lifted from "Sports Champions" this is basically just Golf but using a Frisbee instead. After playing these for about an hour though I threw all the stuff back in the box until last night.
So why until last night? Well my sister and her partner decided to pop around for a surprise visit. As my sister vanished into the other room to natter with my bet..worst half, I decided to break out Sports Champions to show Rob the new addition to my gaming family. The next few hours saw us taking it in turns using the one Playstation controller provided to play the various elements of Sports Champions. (Really Sony need to include 2 controllers in a starter pack as playing these types of games on your own is just a bit sad really)
For some reason the portion of Sports Champions we enjoyed the most was Bocce, which is basically Crown Green Bowling with a twist. In 2 player mode the game is quite fun and kinda reminds me of the experience you get with Bowling on Wii Sports when a few of you play. Like giving the other person abuse when they do badly and asking them if they want a tissue to wipe away the tears after you beat them. This is best done when playing against the kids, although some will say it amounts to child abuse, but kids need to learn about winning and losing and not that everyone that takes part no matter how bad is a winner. (Plus it's funny seeing 6 year olds cry after losing)
Another part we both seemed to enjoy was the Archery, I can see this getting old pretty fast though resulting in you never playing it other than when someone notices it in the menu. Which is a shame as it isn't bad in the short term.
All the other games though kinda sucked, Table Tennis just seemed shitty, Gladiator Duel sees you flailing your arms about like a mad man only to not actually hit your opponent. As for Volley Ball, well we couldn't be arsed trying it as whats the point when you have just one controller to use? The result is Sports Champions has some good and bad bits, heck you can call it a 50/50 split between the good and the shite.
The Playstation Move if used correctly (I.E. Not to just see loads of shovel-ware titles released for it like on the Wii) can be a good thing for family and party gaming. At the moment I like the Move, yet only time will tell if my feelings remain the same about it in the future.
